Marriage rates at all time low

12:07 Wed 02 April 2008
Marriage rates are at the lowest they've ever been since records began in 1862. A paltry 286,980 lovebirds tied the knot last year - which in statistic terms means noone.

So why the big party pooping? What do British folk have against the humble wedding buffet, public displays of 'virginal' affection, and entertaining speeches from relatives they've never met? Lack of love? Fear of divorce? Or just downright laziness?

Shadow Home Secretary David Davis, thinks families have been penalised by government policies.

But we reckon the real culprit is Sex and The City. Lest anyone forget, it took Carrie 6 long seasons to hang up her disco boots and plump for Big. Could the sassy girl-folk have had a real effect on our take of love in a modern age?

Or is the cult of celebrity to blame? The amount of whimsical 'I do's' the average sleb gets through in a lifetime is enough to feed a small army! No wonder the common garden pleb isn't exactly filled with fervour about the sanctity of marriage.

And when folk do finally realise getting wed might give them a tax break or two come death - it's becoming a lot later in life. The average age for a man to buckle down to honest living is now 31.8, and women 29.7. Again, simple answer. Traditionally young folk get hitched because all their mates are doing it- and because society defines a correct age to do it. So stamp out the decimal point for goodness sake! Tell people the right age to marry is 29 and they will - but 29.7 - we challenge anyone to actually know when that is!

Ah all these musings. We feel a lot like Carrie, typing furiously on her Mac while staring wistfully into space... Bottom line. Get married if you want. Don't if you don't want. But whatever you do make sure you get mini fish n chips on the buffet menu - else StyledLife won't be coming!

I think you will find that marriage these days is hugely scary for the average guy. I bet there are tousands of guys out there that have been shafted by women they have married and lost everything they worked their whole lives for. All a woman has to do is have a baby in wedlock and she gets the house, an annual salary (from the ex) and lives happy as larry, more often than not, with a new lover. And with the way house prices have gone this leaves guys pretty much homeless and in a position of debt that means they have little choice but to become bankrupt. Don't get me wrong, if a guy does the dirty he deserves everything coming to him, but when the law gives everything away to the wife EVEN when she has the affair and tells her fella to get lost, leaving the guy homeless - does this really enspire confidance in marriage or even trust in another partner.
